Lego Triple Seven
Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 8:08PM I will be the first to admit, I have an unhealthy obsession with Lego.
Recently, I have been buying up any Lego sets from the fantastic BrickLink, buying bricks that interest me and most of all, using Lego Digital Designer. What a fantastic product this is! You're able to build almost anything you like (the entire brick collection isn't available) to any size you like.
I, so far, have only found one flaw - will what I am building, actually stand-up?
With that flaw in mind, I've started building a Lego scale Boeing 777 with retractable gear and hopefully real flaps and the like. Very nerdy, very exciting and weirdly notoriously hard! My biggest problems have been structural. I know that this model will weigh several kilos when it comes to completion and I have to trust that my wheelbase and retractable gear hold this enormous Lego creation up.

The picture of the gear show I've had to build with some creative license. The wheels do not 'droop' front-to-back, nor are the gear doors as big as I've built. The achilles 'heel' of the trucks also has no physical impact on the wheels or its lifting.
Behind the front wheel you'll see a blue seat with tan head rest. They do look HUGE, but these seats are sunk into the floor of the cabin. Of course, currently, the aircraft and the interior will represent a British Airways 777.

I don't want to give too much away this early-on, but as my plane takes shape, I'll post some more pictures and highlight on the progress so far.
In the meantime, for anyone interested in Lego, download the Lego Digital Designer and also grab a copy of Jonathan Bender's excellent LEGO, A Love Story (ISBN 978-0-470-40702-8), an excellent read and so very true for adult Lego fans.
